Second Annual Juried Art Contest

LOXAHATCHEE VISIONS

Deadline: Entries will be accepted at the VC from Nov 8-Nov 12. VC open daily 9-4.Reception and Award Presentation Sunday Nov 20 at 1 PM

Rules: Entries that do not comply with all rules will be disqualified.
*Contest open to all artists.
*Each artist may submit one or two works of art.
*Original art only-no photographs. (We have a photo contest in the winter season.)
*The subject of the art must be inspired by a "Loxahatchee vision."
*Any media or mixed media (except photography) may be used.
*Each entry must be framed and ready for hanging. Wrapped canvas edges are fine.
*Each entry is limited to no more than 36" on each side including framing.
*A label must be attached to the back of each entry with the title of the work, the artist'sname, the media type, and the sale price.
*Friends of Loxahatchee will attempt to sell the entries and will retain 25% of the saleprice as a contribution to the Refuge.
*Each artist will be expected to remove unsold art after the display period ends Jan 8th.

Categories: Entries will be judged on technical excellence, originality, creativity,visual impact, and artistic merit. All decisions of the judges are final.
*There are two categories - Novice (up to age 18) and Adult (age 18 and above).
*Each category will be awarded:First Prize ($250), Second Prize ($150), Third Prize ($100).
*Judges may designate up to 3 entries in each category as Honorable Mentions.
*Judges may decide not to award cash prizes if there are less than 10 entries in acategory.

Entry Fee and Form: A check or money order to The Friends of Loxahatchee mustaccompany the completed entry form. Place both in an envelope labeled“Friends Art Contest” and bring to the VC with the entry.

OASIS PHOTO CONTEST 2011

More than € 30,000 in prizes will be given in the international nature photography contest: OASIS PHOTO CONTEST 2011. More than 100 awards in cash, trips and photographic equipment will go to the winners. Ten winners will be selected from each category.

The competition is indeed divided in 10 different sections:

The official Federal Recreation Lands photo contest. It is sponsored by the National Park Foundation and is open to all age 13 and above. Photos can be taken on any Federal Agency land-National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Forests, National Monuments, etc. Entries must come in by the end of December.

3-day bird photography course at Loxahatchee this coming January

Michael Rosenbaum is offering a 3-day bird photography course at Loxahatchee this coming January. Michael has competed successfully in international nature photo competitions, has had numerous bird images published, and has exhibited in museums and libraries in the local area.The dates for the course are: Saturday 1/23, Sunday, 1/24, and Saturday 1/30.

All three sessions should be attended. This course will provide an introduction to some technical aspects involved in bird photography along with shooting opportunities for practice and guidance. Photographers who use dSLR cameras may attend (a tripod is not necessary).

We will have two hours in the classroom (9:15-11:15 a.m.) on both Saturdays at the Visitor Center and two hours in the field (7-9 a.m.) on Sunday on the Marsh Trail for hands-on experience.

The 26th annual A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Photography Contest will be conducted from January 3, 2009 to March 1, 2009.

The Friends of the A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge will present
over $1500 in prizes to winners in 6 categories and to a Grand Winner. Winners and Honorably Mentioned photographs will be displayed at the Refuge's Visitor Center, on the Refuge's web site http://www.fws.gov/loxahatchee, and in Friends of the A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge's annual calendar.

Select photographs will also be made available for sale at the Friends of the A.R.M. Loxahatchee NWR store inside the Refuge Visitor Center. The Everglades Photographic Society http://www.evergladesphotosociety.org will coordinate and conduct the contest for the Refuge. The contest's rules and entry forms are available at the Visitor Center and on the web at
http://www.evergladesphotosociety.org/loxcontest/. If you have questions about the photography contest, please

The refuge is located off U.S. 441/SR 7, two miles south of SR 804 (Boynton Beach Blvd.) and three miles north of SR 806 (Delray Beach’s Atlantic Avenue). The refuge is currently open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., seven days a week. Refuge hours change seasonally and are posted at each entrance. The Visitor Center hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends. An entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle or $1.00 per pedestrian is charged. A variety of annual passes, including a $12.00 refuge specific annual pass, are available. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting, and enhancing fish and wildlife habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 100-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System comprised of 549 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands, and other special management areas. It also operates 70 national fish hatcheries, 64 fish and wildlife management offices, and 78 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces Federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Aid program that distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies.

EPS assists the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation with its annual Student Photography Project

On Saturday, October 18 and Saturday, October 25, 2008, the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation conducted its annual Student Photography Project at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. EPS was actively involved in the project, with several EPS members leading student groups through photographic assignments while teaching them basic techniques. Many photos were taken. Cameras were provided by the Foundation. Many students also brought cameras of their own. On the 18th, photos were printed from each of the student groups and pasted onto poster boards. On the 25th, activity at the Refuge was heightened by the annual Cypress Harvest, which created even more photo ops for the students as volunteers harvested seeds from the trees. Free saplings were distributed. This was a thoroughly enjoyable event for everyone. Hopefully, some seeds of a different kind were planted, seeds that will germinate into a lifelong love of photography and of nature within the students.

Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club 14th Annual Arts Exhibition

Joanne Williams will have her display booth set up at the Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club 14th Annual Arts Exhibition on Sunday, March 16, 2008 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It is open to the general public at no charge. The event will be held at 2701 NE 42nd St. Lighthouse Point, Florida. If you have time, please stop by and say "hello".

11th Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival

EPS members will be present at the 11th Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida on January 23 to the 28, 2008. Joanne Williams will be making a presentation on Madagascar, Africa, Pantanal, and the Everglades on Wednesday (01/23) from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and again on Saturday (01/26) from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. She will also be conducting several in-the-field photography workshops on the 24th, 25th, and 26th. Hope to see you there.
